A tech sell-off hit on Friday

The Nasdaq fell 2.9%, its worst day since June, as Intel crashed 29% and doubts grew over whether huge AI spending will pay off.

The big picture

Thursday night's results from Intel and Amazon set the tone. Intel gave a much weaker forecast than expected and had its worst day since 1974, dragging chip makers worldwide lower, while Amazon's heavy spending plans (about $220bn of capex, money spent on data centres and equipment) kept worries about the cost of the AI boom alive. The S&P 500 fell 1.8% and the VIX 'fear gauge' jumped 13% to 19.4. Europe's Stoxx 600 dipped 0.4% as its tech shares had their worst day since July, but London's FTSE 100 edged up 0.1% thanks to AstraZeneca. Gold dropped nearly 4% on fears that central banks will keep raising rates. This morning US futures point slightly higher and oil is down about 3% on hopes of Middle East diplomacy.
